The demand for green UX/UI designers is growing rapidly. So join this amazing movement for more ecological sustainability within digital design.

  • Self-study, live cohort and individual options available.

You can change the world with UX/UI Design. Positively as well as negatively.

We design thousands of websites, apps, and other digital products a year. And what do we get? Slow-loading websites that can’t be opened during train rides. Frustrating online stores where it’s hard to find sustainable products. Emails that clutter our user’s inboxes with hundreds of attachments and images.

Yep, it’s true that the web has a carbon footprint. And that as a UX/UI Designer you can ensure sustainable consumption, mental health, accessibility and a lot more alongside lightweight websites. Much of it with a flyswatter.

Become a highly skilled designer who creates environmentally-friendly websites and apps without sacrificing your creativity

You’ve read hundreds of blog posts and listened to a bunch of podcasts about green web design.

And while you understand the importance of a more sustainable internet, now you want to know HOW to be a part of it. You find yourself wondering:

  • What does green UX/UI Design really look like?
  • Is it really possible to design innovative and creative ecologically sustainable websites and apps?
  • Does anyone buy ecologically sustainable design?
  • How can I bring it into my design processes?
  • Where should I start? What is important? What is not?
  • How do I sell the benefits of green design to my clients and / or team members?
  • How can we implement it into our team so that it doesn’t get forgotten during concept, design and development?
  • Is there a market for freelancing or permanent positions?
  • Is it all really worth it?

I feel you. I see you.

These are all questions that I can answer. Because I asked them myself over and over again.

Chic, sexy and highly converting UX/UI Design

Your designs can be anything. Loud. Quiet. Colorful. Relaxed. Romantic. Bubbly. Elegant. Warm-hearted. Serious. Modern. And everything else you want it to be.

Let’s get rid of the mindset of “I can’t do anything cool and modern anymore if it’s going to be environmentally sustainable.” That’s not true. We’re just using slightly different stylistic approaches. For usability, branding and our environment.

With green design, your digital product turns into a super fast oiled machine with an increase in SEO ranking, customers and conversions. How? Because it’s lightweight, more enjoyable for users and attracts the new era of conscious buyers and consumers.

The modules of the course

The Green UX/UI Design course comes with a 100% learning by doing approach. Step by step along the design process. With a real or hypothetical project of your choice. It can be a website, an online shop, a mobile or a desktop application.

  • Your own blocks
  • Build your own manifesto

Research |  Module 1 – 3

Step 1: Empathize with business and users

Get clear on the project‘s status quo, user‘s desires, requirements and the business behind the project. This is super necessary in order to get to know green design opportunities as well as limits.

Details of the module

Before we get into ecological sustainability, we need to know where we‘re at with the users, the project and the company behind it all. Because all of them still matter very much. It’s also the perfect time to find out the user’s, team’s and business’s take on sustainability.

  • Reflect on the business
  • Do user research
  • Collect project requirements

Step 2: Non-human Personas

Map out environmental actors as well as full non-human Persona profiles for your project. This could be nature in general, ecosystems or animals that are negatively impacted or you’d want to be positively affected.

Details of the module

Bringing nature into our projects, design and decision processes is one of the most essential steps in greening the web. Non-human Personas support us to acknowledge our impact on nature, to build up empathy and to get inspired for creative solutions.

  • Discover environmental actors
  • Create non-human Persona profiles
  • Identify the positive and negative impact on nature
  • Brainstorm and prioritize solutions
  • Host non-human Persona workshops yourself

Step 3: Sustainability infused User Journey Map

Follow your user’s footsteps and map their user journey from before using your product, to during and after. Have a look at possible sustainable pitfalls and gain a lot of inspiration for your designs.

Details of the module

User Journey Maps depict an entire process that a hypothetical user can go through. From the information, to the booking, to the purchase process. This mapping goes far beyond a single product or service. It also considers everything that lies outside of single touchpoints (such as a website).

Sustainability infused User Journey Maps additionally look at the ecological impact of each step. It adds extra lanes that give us a great reminder to search for problems and opportunities in the fields of sustainability.

  • Set up the map
  • Fill out the map
  • Use the findings for your design
  • Host Sustainability infused User Journey Map workshops yourself

Design |  Module 4 – 6

Step 4: Design lightweight

Creatively dispel the UX/UI energy eating monsters and tap into your designer’s power. We’ll discuss images, videos, click paths, storage, colors and all of the other monsters that make digital products heavy.

Details of the module

At the end of this module you will know what the energy eating monsters are, what to refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink, regenerate. Your designs can be anything. Loud. Quiet. Colorful. Relaxed. Romantic. Bubbly. Elegant. Warm-hearted. Serious. Modern. And everything else you want it to be.

This chapter includes a fabulous guidebook with loads of examples and best practices.

  • What are energy eating monsters?
  • Set an intention and collect creative ideas
  • Design a lightweight digital product

Step 5: Eco-conscious psychology

Create positive impact by raising awareness and changing behavior to more sustainable ones. This includes greener eCommerce, ecologically positive behavior psychology and mentally healthy design.

Details of the module

We need to utilize behavior change models to understand how individuals can be educated on ecologically important topics and can be motivated to adopt eco-friendly behaviors. To get people into real action.

This chapter includes two awesome guidebooks with loads of examples and best practices.

  • Raising awareness
  • Changing behavior
  • Greener eCommerce
  • Mentally healthy design

Step 6: Test and iterate

Prototype and test your design in a Usability Test with actual users. It saves a ton of energy and development time, concludes in way better products and is mind-blowing to experience.

Details of the module

Create a prototype and see what works and what doesn’t. It’s way more sustainable to test in general as well as early on in the process. You save lots of energy, money and effort. Optimize the journey, the content and the components.

  • Prototype your design
  • Self-test and iterate
  • Run a usability test with actual users

Hand-off and analysis |  Module 7 – 8

Step 7: Development hand-off

Export your media assets in the most eco-friendly way and gain basic knowledge for sustainable hosting providers, tech stuff (CSS, JS, caching, etc.) as well as WordPress fundamentals.

Details of the module

Scale, compress and hand over your design deliverables in the most eco-friendly way possible and gather information for a sustainable development hand-off. We won’t get into coding, but we need a good understanding to work with developers.

  • Scale and compress images, videos and other material
  • Eco-Friendly hosting provider
  • Eco-Friendly tech basics
  • WordPress quick tips

Step 8: Measure and audit

Evaluate the current energy and carbon footprint of your digital products as well as the possibilities to reduce the negative impact and increase the positive impact.

Details of the module

Audit the digital product’s energy and carbon footprint as well as other aspects of green UX/UI Design such as the state of communication, transparency, raising awareness for ecological matters or eCommerce. We go through the various analysis options and how to work with the results.

Your time commitment

The Green UX/UI Design course is set to bring you up to speed in a period of 8 to 10 weeks with approximately 2 to 6 hours of work every week. You can certainly always do more, faster or slower if you choose to.

Your project

You have a website, application or online shop project coming up? Great! Then use the project to follow the course approach. You don’t have any current projects lined up? No problem! Just select a hypothetical project you’d like to design. It can be an existing website or some absolutely bonkers, out of this world, never seen before dream project. Plus, you can choose various projects for different parts of the course. It’s all up to you and what you want to work on.

Live calls

Live calls are your ask-anything-time. If you’re in the group live cohort they are a great way to connect with other members and get feedback on what you’re working on. If you chose the individual route it’s purely your time for your course progress and questions. Plus, if you can’t make it to a live call in the group cohort, you can send in questions and watch the recording.

You want to do more than just compressing images.

You’d love to hone your design skills so they become a force for good and make you a valuable asset to the ocean of companies with slow-loading, carbon-guzzling websites.

You want to feel creative, inspired and joyful.

You desire to whole-heartedly grasp the universe of ecologically sustainable design. With clarity and a real structure.

You want to live your passion. Your purpose.

I get it! That’s why I created this course. To offer you a different perspective on UX/UI Design. Set you up for success. Give you a fast lane pass.

Sandy Dähnert from green the web in front of green plants.

Hi, I’m Sandy

I love this topic! When I heard about green design for the first time I immediately fell in love with it. I’ve worked with big companies like Adobe, Vodafone and more. But this topic finally drew me under its spell.

12 years in UX/UI and 6 years in ecologically and socially sustainable design have given me many insights into the design business. This course would be the fast lane for you.

What it allowed me to do? To work with clients I truly admire, such as Petricore as a sustainable hosting provider, to Zero Waste body care, to couples therapy, to women’s health, to many more. Websites, online shops, complex applications, landing pages, name it. All with the feeling of finally following a purpose. Bringing true value to the field.

As designers, we have a responsibility. Our websites shape society. They frustrate or inspire. They have an impact on our planet. And it is this responsibility that I would like to use wisely. With you. Towards Environment Centered Design.

Got a question about the course?

With the group live call supported course version you get access to the full self-study material plus 8 live calls, direct feedback and an extra group chat space. This way you can ask all your specific questions, get more support from me and go deeper into the topic. With the self-study version you get access to the self-study material and a common community space. The self-study material is set up in a way that you can go through the course by yourself and learn tons from it. You just won’t get direct feedback or individual question time from me. If you want to mix both, you can take the individual route with live calls and video reviews just for yourself and at your own preferred times.

You know how to roughly sketch, design or build a digital product? Then you’ll get tons out of this course. You might be a web designer, graphic designer, UX architect, UI designer, junior, senior, career switcher or something along those lines. Just a heads up: Some experience in digital design is recommended before taking on this course. This way it’s a lot easier to understand the course content.

No, it’s not a problem. You can just select a hypothetical project you’d like to design. It can be an existing website or some absolutely bonkers, out of this world, never seen before, dream project.

Yes and no. We will go through the full process from starting a digital product design, to user and environmental research, to UX architecture, to UI design, to user testing, up to the point of setting everything up for development. You know how to develop your digital product in code or set it up in a CMS such as WordPress? Then you can end up with a fully finished, live ecologically sustainable website or app. I will share a couple of technical advice with you, but we won’t code or discuss tech development in the course.

You will have access to a common community space as well as for the group live course an extra cohort specific group chat. Both in Slack. Those spaces are there for you to get to know each other, exchange, talk, chat and get support. If you’re in the live course, you will also attend a big welcome session to kick off the cohort together.

You will find templates for Figma, Adobe XD and Miro in the course but you can design and collaborate in whatever tool you feel most comfortable with. It’s your journey and your choice!

You will keep access to the self-study materials, such as videos and guidebooks without any deadline. The live calls and direct feedback in the group live cohort are limited to 10 weeks. The live calls and video reviews of the individual route are redeemable for 6 months after purchase.

The course brings you up to speed within one full week or 2 to 6 hours of work weekly across 2 months. Of course, it very much depends on how much you want to build into your design project.

The live calls in the group cohort are recorded and will be available for everyone in the live course cohort. If you already know you won’t make it to a call, you can send in your questions beforehand and we will answer them in the live call for you to watch later.

Yes, for both, live cohort and self-study option, payment plans are available.

Of course! Many companies have professional development funds for their employees. And even if you don’t have an official training budget, sending an email works very well.
