The background
Understand the what and why of eco-friendly design, our web’s carbon footprint and how we contribute to over-consumption and unsustainable behavior. We’ll also talk about economical, environmental and social benefits of eco-friendly design.

WordPress as a tool
Let’s talk about the base environmental footprint of WordPress as a tool and the key attributes for a greener website on this Content Management System. WordPress is an awesome tool that is highly adjustable. So yes, it’s a great way to use as a base.

Measure and analyze websites
Analyze the digital product’s carbon footprint as well as other aspects of eco-friendly design. We go through the various analysis options and how to work with the results.

Tech setup

Hosting providers
Hosting on renewable energies has a huge effect of up to 9% of carbon emissions of your website. So let’s talk about how to find a hosting provider with renewable energies, the different levels of sustainability and other aspects to reflect on.

Every theme comes with a base weight. Some themes have higher ones and some have lower ones. We’ll have a look into awesome themes that minimize the data load to maximize the page speed and ecological sustainability.

Page builders
Bloated code and excessive features in page builders can result in higher energy consumption. Have a look into the data stream of page builders such as Elementor or Divi as well as great and super easy to deal with alternatives.

Tech details
Fine tune your tech setup in terms of scripts, plugins, caching and more. I’ll give you plenty of recommendations to choose your favorites from. Easy to digest for everyone. We will get into everything that is possible without coding.

Content assets

Content energy eating monsters
Creatively dispel the content monsters that use data and therefore slow down your website and increase your environmental footprint. Tap into your designer’s power on lightweight images, videos, animations and interactions, click paths, colors, fonts, audio, storage, third party tools and design systems.

Eco-conscious psychology
We might add to over-consumption and unsustainable behavior with our websites and online shops. Reflect on the user’s psychology and how to create a positive impact for your users and nature. With tons of recommendations, examples and best practices for raising awareness, greener eCommerce and changing behavior to the better.

Sandy Dähnert from green the web in front of green plants.

Hi, I’m Sandy

Eco-friendly design has truly captured my heart! When I read about green design for the first time I immediately fell in love with it. I’ve worked with big companies like Adobe, Vodafone and more. But this topic finally drew me under its spell.

11+ years in UX/UI and 5+ years in ecologically and socially sustainable design have given me many insights into the design business. This course would be the fast lane for you.

What it allowed me to do? To work with clients I truly admire, in sustainable hosting, Zero Waste products, couples therapy, women’s health, to many more. Websites, online shops, complex applications, landing pages, name it. All with the feeling of finally following a purpose. Bringing true value to the field.

As designers, we have a responsibility. Our websites shape society. They frustrate or inspire. They have an impact on our nature. And it is this responsibility that I would like to use wisely. With you. Towards Environment Centered Design.
